BRAVE VOICES, BOLD IMPACT

Turning Stories into Change

Brave Voices, Bold Impact is a collaborative training initiative designed to help Rhode Islanders build the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to speak up, shape policy, and advocate for stronger behavioral health and social supports in our state.

Together with partners across Rhode Island, we are offering free in-person and virtual workshops to help community members learn how to:

  • Understand the legislative process
  • Share their stories effectively
  • Communicate with lawmakers
  • Build confidence in public speaking
  • Navigate the state budget
  • Take meaningful advocacy action
  • Connect with other Rhode Islanders committed to change

These workshops are open to individuals with lived experience, caregivers, peer specialists, students, community leaders, and anyone who wants to make their voice heard.

Brave Voices, Bold Impact offers various core training modules where you’ll receive a certificate for each:

Learn to share your experience in a way that influences policy and connects with decision-makers.

Your story is one of the most powerful tools you have in advocacy. This workshop helps you understand how to shape your lived experience into a compelling, grounded narrative that speaks to policymakers, community partners, and the public.

In this session, you will:

  • Learn what makes a story effective in advocacy settings
  • Explore structure, clarity, and emotional pacing
  • Understand how to share your experience safely and intentionally
  • Practice crafting a personal story using a simple framework
  • Learn how your story can be used in written testimony, emails, and legislative meetings
  • Connect with others who are also learning to speak up

NAMI Smarts for Advocacy is a skill-building training provided by NAMI RI that helps people affected by mental health conditions turn their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy.

No prior speaking experience is required.
Open to all community members.

A welcoming introduction to how policy works in Rhode Island — and how your voice can shape it.

Advocacy 101 gives you the essential knowledge you need to participate in the legislative process with confidence. If you’ve ever wondered “Where do I even start?”, this session is for you.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How a bill becomes a law in Rhode Island (and why it might not)
  • How to communicate effectively with legislators
  • The different ways to take action (emails, calls, testimony, meetings)
  • How to navigate hearing schedules and legislative calendars
  • Key community priorities for the upcoming session
  • How to submit written or live testimony

This training uses a shared slide deck developed by multiple Rhode Island organizations to ensure clarity and consistency.

This workshop pairs well with Storytelling for Change.

Build the skills, grounding, and presence to speak in public — whether to legislators, community groups, or your peers.

Public speaking can feel intimidating, especially when sharing vulnerable stories. This workshop provides a supportive, collaborative environment where you can build confidence at your own pace.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Explore your communication style
  • Practice pacing, pauses, and clarity
  • Learn how to manage fear, anxiety, and self-doubt
  • Use grounding tools that help regulate your body while speaking
  • Understand the role of compassion and boundaries in storytelling
  • Build confidence through gentle mock-practice (optional)
  • Learn self-care strategies before and after speaking

Facilitators include psychologists, trainers, advocates with lived experience, and survivor speakers.

This workshop is trauma-informed and intentionally paced.
No one is required to speak if they do not feel ready.

A practical introduction to how the state budget works — and why it matters to behavioral health and community systems.

The state budget determines funding for mental health programs, youth supports, crisis systems, housing stability, and so much more. This session breaks it down in simple, accessible language.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Understand how the Rhode Island budget process works
  • Learn where funding decisions come from
  • Explore how the budget impacts behavioral health and social services
  • Identify where community advocates can influence the process
  • Learn how to track budget priorities throughout the session

Facilitated by experts from the Economic Progress Institute, this workshop is an excellent pairing with Advocacy 101.
